Ancient Faith for a modern world

Welcome to Intown!

Since 2001, Intown has sought to help people meet God, grow in relationship with Him and each other, and seek the peace and prosperity of Portland through the expression of the historic Christian gospel.

In our fast-paced and fragmented world we believe that the church's most ancient resources are still its best, and so in all our gatherings our hope is that you will encounter the living God through the ancient story of Jesus of Nazareth.

OUR BELIEFS

There is a motto that has been repeated in the church for hundreds of years, and it aptly describes Intown: “In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”

These essentials are rooted in both the Protestant Reformation and two ancient creeds held by Christians around the world: the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. These creeds express our basic beliefs about the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We connect to both the historic and global church through a four-fold liturgy as we gather in the Lord's Name, hear from the Lord's Word, commune together at the Lord's Table, and receive the Lord's Blessing, sending us out in mission.

In holding to the historic Christian faith and the Reformed Confessions there are other doctrines that are important to us and shape our worship and life in community. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments hold a uniquely authoritative position in the church. The Bible is the Word of God and, as such, is to be received and obeyed in its entirety. The interpretation of Scripture is to be distinguished from the Scripture itself, so that all ecclesial authorities regularly submit to the living Word for deeper and more faithful understanding of God and his work in the world.

The Sacraments of the Lord’s Supper and Baptism are to be received by faith as a means of God’s grace to us, his real, spiritual presence, for union with God and ongoing spiritual nourishment.

Christian living is grounded in the Two Great Commandments—Love for God and Neighbor. Therefore, we are called to be holy, resist evil, oppression, and injustice, and to seek the Shalom of the world.

We express our beliefs in the ways we worship God, love one another, and serve our neighbors, and we would love to have you join us!
